Claude Monet and the bridge at Dolceacqua

This is Dolceacqua's famous humpback stone medieval bridge and in the lower left hand corner Claude Monet's painting of it. Monet visited Dolceacqua, along with Renoir, in 1884.  Monet described the bridge as 'a jewel of lightness.'

Voici le fameux pont médiéval à dos d'âne en pierre de Dolceacqua et dans le coin inférieur gauche, la peinture  de celui-ci par  Claude Monet. Monet a visité Dolceacqua avec Renoir et il a décrit le pont comme un " bijou de légèreté ".

Gone fishin'

A fisherman in the River Roya at Ventimiglia. In fact this is the estuary leading to the sea. Note the swans and the cygnets on the sand bank.

A Rocky Bed

Apricale is one of those Italian villages, just across the border from Menton, that makes you gasp as you drive towards it.

A smile from a pretty girl on a bike.  She's riding down the ramp having crossed over the River Roya in Ventimiglia.

Le sourire d'une jolie fille sur un vélo. Elle descend la rampe après avoir traversé la rivière la Roya à Vintimille.

Puntarelle

This is puntarelle which is a Roman speciality - seen here in Ventimiglia market. A member of the chicory family and apparently has the sharp taste of endive with a hint of fennel. Next time I'll buy one instead of photographing it!

Voici de la  puntarelle qui est une spécialité de Rome - vue ici dans le marché de Vintimille. Elle fait partie de la famille de la chicorée et elle a, parait-il, le goût piquant de l'endive avec un soupçon de fenouil. La prochaine fois, au lieu de la photographier,  j'en achèterai!

Promenade Le Corbusier - Parasol Pines

A Village Wedding - Long Life and Happiness to Aurélie et Frédéric

Our last look at the Gorbio wedding of Aurélie et Frédéric as the radiant bride turns to give us a beautiful smile.

A Village Wedding - the Magic of the Night

The village of Gorbio is always beautiful but at night it has a certain magic.  And with a wedding party in the main square, of course, it is entrancing.  Here, the bride and groom are walking around the tables talking to their guests.

Le village de Gorbio est toujours beau mais la nuit, il a une certaine magie.  Et bien sûr, avec une fête de mariage sur la place principale, il est envoûtant. Ici, la mariée et le marié se promènent autour des tables pour parler avec leurs invités.

A Village Wedding - the Menu

It's time to eat!  And as always at the Restaurant Beausejour in Gorbio village, you eat well! They have a Michelin 'Fourchette' after all. 

This is the first course - a 'farandole' of local specialities: barbajuan, raw ham, aubergine fritters, salad, melon, a coulis of tomato, basil, topped with a passion flower.  And the bride, like everyone else, takes a photograph.

The rest of the menu:  Filet of beef with thyme, served with a cepes sauce and three delicious vegetables.

A cheese plate served with mesclun and walnuts.

For dessert: A gourmet platter: Profiteroles with hot chocolate, almond effilées, tarte tatin, creme anglais, sorbet, coulis de fruit, creme chantilly, Caramel Blond.

And to drink: Le Fregalon Rouge and le Fregalon Rose from Provence, champagne, coffee and Limoncello.

C'est le moment du repas! Et comme toujours au restaurant Le Beauséjour au village de Gorbio, on mange bien! Ils ont " une  Fourchette " au Michelin tout de même!   

Voici le premier plat - une « farandole » de spécialités locales: barbajuan, jambon cru, beignets d'aubergines, salade, melon, et coulis de tomate, basilic, décorée d'une fleur de la Passion. Et la mariée, comme tout le monde, prend une photo.  

Le suite du menu: Filet de boeuf au thym, servi avec une sauce aux cèpes et trois délicieux légume.  

Plateau de fromages servi avec du mesclun aux noix.  

Pour le dessert:  Une assiette gourmande avec profiteroles au chocolat chaud, amandes effilées, tarte tatin, crème anglaise, sorbe , coulis de fruits, crème chantilly, Caramel Blond.   

Pour les boissons: Frégalon Rouge et  Frégalon Rosé de Provence, Champagne, café et Limoncello.

There were two official photographers at the wedding.  Both great guys and so friendly.  I was much taken with this one's nail polish, not to mention that interesting contraption that joins the camera to his eye.

Il y avait deux photographes officiels au mariage. Tous les  deux  étaient vraiment sympathiques. J'ai été très intéressée par  le vernis à ongles de celui-ci, pour ne pas mentionner que le drôle d'engin qui reliait  l'appareil à son oeil.

Aurélie sips a well-deserved kir whilst her good-looking and dapper husband, Frédéric, checks the seating arrangements before everyone sits down to dinner. Meanwhile Gorbio's 300 year old elm tree looks on benignly.

Aurélie sirote un kir bien mérité tandis que Frédéric, son beau et élégant mari vérifie la disposition des sièges avant que tout le monde prenne place pour le dîner. Pendant ce temps l'orme  de 300 ans de Gorbio regarde avec bienveillance.

A Village Wedding - "If Music be the Food of Love ..."

Meet the three musicians who played whilst the apertifs were being served.  The small photo shows them rehearsing earlier and with two of them falling about with laughter. Perhaps the one in the middle had played a duff note.

They played beautifully - wonderfully soft classical music that seemed to fit the atmosphere of these wedding celebrations.

Voici les trois musiciennes qui jouaient tandis que les apéritifs étaient servis. La petite photo montre les répétitions un peu plus tôt avec deux d'entre elles qui rient. Peut-être parce que celle du milieu avait fait une fausse note.  

Elles ont joué magnifiquement - de la musique classique merveilleusement douce qui correspondait bien à l'atmosphère de ces célébrations de mariage.

Today we meet Aurélie, the beautiful bride, and her proud Papa as they pose for the official photographers before walking up to the Mairie for her marriage to Frédéric. Don't you just adore that fabulous dress!

Aujourd'hui, voici Aurélie la belle mariée  avec  son fier papa  qui  posent pour les photographes officiels avant de se diriger jusqu'à la mairie pour son mariage avec Frédéric. Sa robe est vraiment superbe, n'est-ce pas!

A Village Wedding - the Bridal Veil and Headdress
