Collectif Artistes du Village - Vaclav's Window

Vaclav is an artist who takes his holidays in Gorbio. He adores the village and so was invited to be part of the Collectif Artistes du Village. His painting of a window with wine bottles is perfectly hung on this wall, don't you think?

Collectif Artistes du Village - Jacqueline by Michel Tucow

Today we are looking at Michel Tucow's painting of Jacqueline. Jacqueline keeps sheep and ducks, grows fruit and vegetables and has wonderful fresh eggs. Michel is a violinist and also a fabulous cook and he lives on the other side of the square to his painting.

And above the painting, Frederique is day dreaming. Frederique runs the excellent village gift shop.

Aujourd'hui, nous admirons la représentation de Jacqueline par  Michel Tucou. Jacqueline élève des moutons et des canards, cultive des fruits et des légumes et vend  d'excellents œufs frais. Michel est un violoniste et aussi un bon cuisinier. Il habite sur la place, en face de sa peinture exposée.

Et au dessus de la peinture, Frédérique est dans ses rêveries.  Frédérique tient l'excellente boutique de souvenirs du village.

Collectif Artistes du Village - The Fountainhead

There's an art exhibition in the village of Gorbio at the moment.  It's called Dedans/Dehors which means Inside/Outside and so you'll find art displayed on the houses of the medieval village and also inside the restored presbytery.

This painting depicting the fountain built in 1882 is by Geraldine Rebuffati, who is the organiser of Le Collectif Artistes du Village.

En ce moment, il y a une exposition d'art dans le village de Gorbio  Son nom: Dedans / Dehors et ainsi on trouve des oeuvres d'art exposées sur les maisons du village médiéval comme  à l'intérieur du presbytère restauré.

Ce tableau,  représentant la fontaine construite en 1882, est de Géraldine Rebuffati laquelle est aussi l'organisatrice du Collectif des Artistes du Village.

Promenade le Corbusier - Personal Trainer

It's usual to see people walking, jogging, exercising their dog or just looking at the view on the Promenade le Corbusier at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, but I've never seen a lady working out with her personal trainer. That's Monaco in the background.

Il est courant  de voir des gens qui marchent, qui  joggent, qui font faire de l'exercice à leur chien ou tout simplement qui admirent la vue sur la Promenade Le Corbusier à Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, mais je n'ai jamais vu une dame qui travaille avec son entraîneur personnel. A l'arrière plan, c'est Monaco.

Le Weekend Africain - Last Dance for Me

Our last day with the Sing Sing Family from Senegal who entertained us so fabulously in Gorbio village. I loved this guy - crazy wild dancer with equally crazy hair. In the smaller photo, the village children are mesmerized as you can see.

Le Weekend Africain - the Mayor's T-Shirt

We're approaching the end of our time with the fabulous perforamers of the Sing Sing Family.  The Mayor of Gorbio, Michel Isnard gets up on stage, along with Alain Porre, 3rd Adjoint (he's wearing the gold outfit from Senegal.

The Mayor's t-shirt says 'If you piss me off,  I'm going back to Senegal.'

Le Weekend Africain - the Girls

The girls pull their skirts up, almost take off their shirts. Sabar dancing from Senegal has been described 'more sexual than any dancing seen on MTV.'

Le Weekend Africain - Maf Faye

Meet Maf Faye, artistic director of the group, Sing Sing Family. He is playing a sabar drum which is a common musical instrument in Senegal.  It's played with one bare hand and one small stick, which produces the instrument's distinctive crack. The bàkks, (rhythmic phrases) played by sabar drummers is said to originate from imitations of spoken words.

Voici Maf Faye, directeur artistique du groupe Sing Sing Family. Il joue du sabar qui est un genre de tambour  commun au Sénégal. Il joue avec une main nue et un petit bâton, qui produit un bruit  caractéristiquede l'instrument. Les bàkks, (phrases rythmiques) jouées par des batteurs de sabar sont parait-il des imitations des mots parlés.

The rain stopped, the sky brightened and we dined under the stars on 'Poulet Coco.'

And then the drums started and we were transported to Senegal by the amazing Sing Sing Family group and their artistic director, Maf Faye.  And as you can see - it was fabulous!

La pluie a cessé , le ciel s'est éclairci et nous avons dîné sous les étoiles " Poulet Coco " au menu.

Et puis les tambours ont résonné et nous avons été transportés au Sénégal par l'incroyable groupe  "Sing Sing Family" et son directeur artistique, Maf Faye. Et comme vous pouvez le voir - c'était fabuleux!

'Le Weekend Africain' - Rain Dance

If the rain doesn't stop, the African dinner and the performance by the Senegalese group will have to be cancelled. Alain Porre, 3rd Adjoint to the Mayor of Gorbio decides to take matters into his own hands. He gets up on the stage and performs a rain dance to appease the rain gods. Auriane and young Alexander are happy to help.

Meanwhile, the guys behind the bar find an interesting way of keeping dry.

Si la pluie ne s'arrête pas, le dîner africain et la représentation du groupe sénégalais devront être annulés. Alain Porre, 3ème Adjoint au Maire de Gorbio, décide alors de prendre les choses en mains! Il monte  sur la scène et pour apaiser les Dieux, il effectue une danse de la pluie. Auriane et le jeune Alexandre sont heureux de l'aider.

Pendant ce temps, les serveurs derrière le bar ont trouvé  un moyen intéressant pour rester au sec.

'Le Weekend Africain' in Gorbio. An hour or so before the food was due to be served the heavens opened and it rained - and it rained and rained.  Would there be an African meal?  Would there be a concert?

Le Weekend Africain in Gorbio - the Group Sing Sing family

Last night's concert in Gorbio was cancelled because of rain, and then the rain stopped and suddenly we heard the sounds of drums. The Senegalese musicians and dancers of the group Sing Sing family performed for us and they were great! Of course the chairs were wet and most of the audience stood but it didn't matter. And then it rained again ....

Let's hope for better weather tonight. Thanks so much to the musicians and dancers. You were fabulous!

Le concert de la nuit dernière à Gorbio avait été annulé en raison de la pluie mais la pluie s'étant arrêtée, tout à coup nous avons entendu les sons de tambours. Les musiciens et danseurs sénégalais du groupe familiale 'Sing Sing' ont joué pour nous et ils étaient super! Bien sûr, les chaises étaient humides et la plupart des spectateurs se tenaient debout mais cela n'avait pas d'importance. Et puis il pleuvait encore ....

Espérons une meilleure météo ce soir. Merci beaucoup aux musiciens, chanteurs et danseurs. Vous étiez fabuleux!
