This beautiful tree is to be found near the Musee Cocteau. It's called the Silk Floss tree, or in Latin, Chorisia Speciosa.

Colours of Autumn

You'll find the 17th century Chateau of the Counts of Malaussène at the top of Gorbio village.  Photographed yesterday, the Virginia Creeper that covers the facade is changing into its autumn colours.

Fete du Four - Kisses

Another of the many things I love about France is that everyone kisses everyone.  Even if one is in the middle of carving the meat.  Oleg plonks a big fat kiss on his friend, Antoine.

Fete du Four - Sharing

At the Fete of the Ancient Communal Oven in Gorbio,  everyone shares their food with everyone else.  You can end up eating an awful lot more than you intended! But it's too good to say 'no!'

A la Fête du Vieux Four Communal à Gorbio, tous les convives partagent leurs plats avec les autres. On finit  par manger énormément bien plus que ce l'on pensait! Mais c'est trop délicieux pour  dire «non!'

The ageless Antoine and Yvonne share a kiss during the Fete du Four in Gorbio. Some of you will remember 11 year old Paloma who I love to photograph - Antoine and Yvonne are her great grandparents.

Fete du Four - Roast Lamb and Flageolet Beans

Not everyone ate the wild boar. Here Gilbert is carrying a dish of roast lamb with flageolet beans from the ancient oven to a table.

Le sanglier n'a pas été dégusté par tout le monde. Voici Gilbert portant un gigot d'agneau rôti avec des flageolets depuis le vieux four à la table.

Fete du Four - Wild Boar

Antoine carves the meat, burnt on the outside but pink inside. The meat is wild boar killed by village hunters.

Antoine découpe la viande, brûlée à l'extérieur mais rose à l'intérieur. C'est la viande d'un sanglier tué par les chasseurs du village.

Fete du Four - The Mayor and the Meat

The meat has finished roasting and Michel (the Mayor of Gorbio) and Antoine carry the dishes on an enormous makeshift tray to the waiting villagers.

La viande finit de rôtir dans le vieux four.  Michel (le maire de Gorbio) et Antoine portent des plats sur un énorme plateau de fortune aux villageois qui attendent.

Fete du Four - the Ancient Oven and Franco

The building that houses the ancient oven is small. And dark. And very very hot! Franco is pulling out a cooked dish on the paddle, which you see has an incredibly long handle - he's making sure he doesn't hit anything with it. The length of the paddle (and it's longer than you see in this photo) gives you an idea of how deep the oven is.

 Le bâtiment  qui abrite l' ancien four est petit. Et sombre. Et très très chaud! Franco retire un plat cuisiné sur la palette laquelle comme on le voit,  a un manche incroyablement long - il s'assure qu'il ne touche pas quelque chose avec elle. La longueur de la palette (et c'est plus que ce que l'on voit sur cette photo)  donne une idée de la profondeur du four.

Fete du Four - Lunch under the Olive Trees

One of my favourite fêtes in Gorbio is the Fete du Four (the oven). It's the one day in the year when the ancient village oven is lit.  We all bring food, some will be cooked in the oven, others will bring salads and desserts. And of course there are aperitifs and lots of wine.  The Fete takes place under the olive trees in the square at the top of the village and it's only for those who live in Gorbio. So come

Une de mes fêtes favorites à Gorbio est la Fête du  Four. C'est le seul jour de l'année où l'ancien four du village est allumé. Tout le monde amène un ou plusieurs plats dont  certains seront cuits dans le four, d'autres apportent  des salades ou  des desserts. Et bien sûr il y a des apéritifs et beaucoup de vin. La Fête a lieu sous les oliviers de la place en haut du village et elle est organisée seulement pour ceux qui vivent au village. Alors, venez avec moi et profitez de.

Chocolat Poulain

Chocolat Poulain is one of the oldest brands of chocolate in France. The icon of the brand is a jumping foal, which is a wordplay on the creator's name "Poulain", which is French for foal.

Victor-Auguste Poulain began the mass production of chocolate in 1848 in Blois, France, before forming a limited company in 1893. He believed that a commercial future in chocolate would be found by selling to the masses and was innovative in industrialising the production of chocolate and in widespread marketing campaigns targeting children and families.

The company was bought by Cadbury Schweppes in 1988.

La Fête de la Branda - a Child of the Village

People are gathering in Gorbio's village square for the Fete de la Branda. Little Soumaya sees me, runs towards the camera and nearly knocks me over! She loves having her photo taken and also teasing me!
