Love ancient shop front facades. I was photographing this one-time grocer's shop and was waiting for an interesting motor bike to whizz by when suddenly this beautiful old car appeared. It seemed to fit the photo. It's a Traction Avant Citroën.  Perhaps we are in a French film of the 1930s or 40s!

J'aime les devantures des anciens magasins.  Je photographiais cette  vieille épicerie et j'attendais le passage à toute allure d'un intéressant vélo à moteur quand soudainement cette belle voiture ancienne est apparue. Elle a semblé adaptée à la photo. C'est une Traction Avant Citroën. Peut-être  sommes-nous dans un film français des années 1930 -1940!

Hillside gardening

This is how many of us garden in this part of the world.  If you live on a hillside, your land will be terraced like this.  Mine is.  This land though is in Castellar, a hill village above Menton, and the owner is tending to his vines.

C'est ainsi que sont beaucoup de nos jardins dans cette partie du monde. Si vous vivez sur le versant d'une  colline, votre terrain sera en terrasses comme celui-ci. C'est mon cas. Ce terrain se trouve à Castellar, un village sur une colline au-dessus de Menton et le propriétaire est en train de s'occuper de  ses vignes.

Romain, Lascar and Tina

This is Lascar, the new puppy belonging to Romain, the young hunter in Gorbio. He's a Bassett des Alpes (also called a Alpine Dachsbracke) The breed originates from Austria and is used to hunt wild boar and also to find wounded animals. He will be used as a hunting dog alongside Romain's other dog, Tina who you can see HERE. She's also in the third photo alongside Lascar.


Voici Lascar, le nouveau chiot appartenant à Romain, un jeune chasseur de Gorbio. C'est un Basset des Alpes (appelé aussi Alpine Daschsbracke). La race est originaire d'Autriche,  elle sert à chasser le sanglier et également à retrouver les animaux blessés. Il servira  de chien de chasse aux  côtés de l'autre chien de Romain, Tina que vous pouvez voir ICI. Elle se trouve également dans la troiseme photo à côté de Lascar.

Across the tables ...

The Vulcano is a great place to eat good, reasonably priced food, always freshly cook and  friendly service and the chef/owner, Driss, who always smiles.  No wonder this diner is happy as she chats to him.

Le Vulcano est un restaurant formidable pour déguster de bons plats, à un prix raisonnable et  toujours fraîchement cuisinés, où le service est  amical avec le chef/propriétaire, Driss, qui sourit toujours. Pas étonnant que cette dame est heureuse en bavardant avec lui.

The restaurant of the Casino Barrière in Menton offers beautiful views from the terrace.

I was there yesterday hanging my photography for an exhibition at the entrance to the restaurant, hence this snap.  Do come along and see them one day. The exhibition continues until the end of July.

First communion in Gorbio - Ladies in White

Yesterday we saw adorable Paloma posing with her great grandmother.  In this photo she poses with her wonderful grandmother, Dominique - two ladies in white. Love that short haircut!

First communion in Gorbio - Great Great Grandmother

The celebration for the first communion is over and Paloma poses with her proud and wonderful great grandmother, Yvonne. One of the many wonders of Gorbio is that families don't leave - often you find four generations living here. How wonderful that must be!

La cérémonie de la Première Communion est finie et Paloma pose avec sa fière et merveilleuse arrière-grand-mère, Yvonne. Une des nombreuses joies de Gorbio c'est que les familles ne quittent pas le village et souvent on trouve quatre générations qui y vivent. Comme ce doit être merveilleux!

Three children, Lara, Lalie and Paloma, and one adult, Nathalie, Paloma's mother, took their first communion today in the Church of Saint Barthelemy in Gorbio.

A rather fierce market trader but don't worry - he's not in Menton. I took this photo way down in the south of Italy, at Martina Franca in Puglia.

Hidden passage at Plage du Buse

This is the far end of Plage du Buse at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. A private passage leads to the villa above. This end of the beach is covered in dried algae - a bit strange to walk on!
