La Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy - the Golden Apple

The Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy and the offering of the 'golden apple', is a tradition going back to medieval times when the noble knights brought their offerings to the church. The ceremony has kept its character as a religious symbol of the struggle between good and evil, the crucifix and the sword representing the two social orders. Later, it represented the giving of money to the poor of the village and always the largest possible apple was chosen. Nowadays it is studded with euros!

La Fête de la Saint-Barthélemy et l'offerte de la « pomme d'or » sont des  traditions qui remontent à l'époque médiévale, lorsque les nobles chevaliers apportaient leurs offrandes à l'église. La cérémonie a gardé son caractère, comme un symbole religieux de la lutte entre le bien et le mal, le crucifix et l'épée représentant les deux ordres sociaux. Plus tard, elle a représenté le don d'argent aux pauvres du village et chaque fois la plus grosse pomme disponible a été choisie. Aujourd'hui, elle est parsemée d'euros!

The Fete de la Saint Barthelemy in Gorbio starts with the Blessing of the Animals.  Here Pere Guglielmi is blessing one of the beautiful cats that live in the village. Look at the direct look the cat is giving him - I think he knows what is going on!

Yesterday we met Maxence and today we see him with his sister Valendra - two young people who love Gorbio and so loved showing visitors around the village. I know the feeling!

Hier, nous avons rencontré Maxence et aujourd'hui nous le voyons avec sa sœur Valendra - deux jeunes gens qui aiment Gorbio et ainsi aiment le  montrer aux visiteurs autour du village. Je connais ce sentiment!

It's no surprise that a scene like this in the Old Town of Nice is now the 'new norm.' Seeing so many police and army in our towns and on our beaches most certainly gives a sense of security. But goodness, those poor soldiers must be so hot in this summer heat.

Il n'est pas surprenant qu'une scène comme ça dans le Vieux Nice soit maintenant la «nouvelle norme ».  Voir tant de  police et d'armée dans nos villes et sur nos plages donne certainement un sentiment de sécurité. Mais Dieu que ces pauvres soldats doivent avoir chaud dans cette chaleur d'été.
